Auld Lang Syne

Here I am again, it is Sunday afternoon and I am packing again. This is the first time that I go to Pécs on Sunday because I usually go on Monday. The autumn break was good and relaxing for me.

As the weather is getting colder and the afternoons are getting darker we are getting closer to Christmas :) Ok, I know it is not so close yet but if we visit some supermarkets we could think it is already December. Some days ago I was reading one of the advertising papers and I found chocolate Santas all around it. I told mum to give me the latest one because it must be from last year. She was smiling and said that it is the newest one, if I don't believe I can check the date. She was right and I was shocked. So if you can't wait until the 6th of December you can buy chocolate Santas immediately!

Anyway I don't really have problems with this time of the year. Ok, I am not very keen on rainy weather but I love the colours of the leafs and I like wearing coat, scarf and gloves. Though I was born in August I couldn't say that I like summer the most because December has always been a glamorous month for me. Christmas, New Year's Eve, they can never be boring... But in every year there was something extra, something special about December.

I love Christmas songs and I am always looking for new ones. My latest finding is called 'Auld Lang Syne'. I have heard this song for the first time (at least I thought so) in the movie, Sex and The City. It was really good and all of my friends liked it but no one knew it. I was listening to the lyrics but it was really hard to understand so I gave up. This week I had plenty of time and was surfing on the internet and I found it on youtube. There are a lot of versions and I realised why I just couldn't understand the lyrics. Auld Lang Syne is a Scottish expression which means good old times in English.

As I mentioned there were many versions so I chose a faster one. It was a good decision because I realised that I know this song in Hungarian too! It is called 'Régi dal' and at secondary school we all sang this song on the school leaving ceremonies for the graduating class members. Then came another surprise, Auld Lang Syne is known in English speaking countries as a Christmas song or they sing it at New Year's Eve. That was very surprising for me.
So my Christmas-song-assortment is enriched with a new one and I am glad about it! :)
Here are some versions for those who are interested:

Popular, isn't it? :)

Take care ;)

Taste of 'bigcitylife'

Welcome home again. The fall break has already begun and I am very happy about it. Some days, when I don't have to worry about what to take home or to Pécs. In the summer I thought I wouldn't want to come home every weekend, I had enough of Kaposvár for a while. Well, I was wrong. I am always happy when I can come home, and the distance makes everything nicer here.:) In the last 6 weeks I realized some things and my point of view has changed a lot.

I like Pécs and I love big cities too so I decided to visit my friend in Budapest. I know her for 12 years, we have always been classmates since the first day at primary school. I came home from Pécs on Thursday and travelled to the capital on Friday. I had to get up at 5 a.m.!!! I couldn't tell the last time when I had to get up so early, it was horrible for me. Anyway I got to Budapest at 9:30, Viki was waiting for me there. We took the bags to her flat and then we started our shopping tour..:) We finished it at 7 p.m., yeah we can say it was looong :)We had a great time but this day made me sure that it was the right decision not to go there to university. As I mentioned I love big cities and yes, Budapest is beautiful, but I think it depends on from where.

We met some of my ex-classmates by chance and they told us that they haven't been at home for 3 weeks now. I couldn't imagine it. Anyway, it was fine for 2 days, not more. Later when I (hopefully) will have a job I want to live abroad, in a big city if it's possible but not in Budapest. Maybe later I will think differently and the distance will make Budapest as nice as Kaposvár is now for me. I wish all of you a nice fall break. Take care!

England's Rose

New task: choosing a song and writing about it. Really good idea! I have been thinking what I should choose. Maybe it should be my favourite song but I realized that I don't have an exact one: so I've chosen a song which is not my favourite and I don't listen to it very often. I find it beautiful though the topic is not really happy.

This song is called 'Candle in the Wind' by Elton John. Written for the funeral of Lady Diana, Princess of Wales and released in 1997, the song peaked at number one in the United Kingdom, becoming John's fourth number one single. It also peaked at number one in most other countries. The Guinness Book of Records 2007 states that "Candle In the Wind 1997" is the biggest selling single "since records began".

It is of course a sad song but I think beautiful at the same time. Diana was definitely a great woman and the song reflects it. Let me quote my favourite lines:

"And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England's greenest hills
Your candle's burned out long before
Your legend ever will"

I also like this song because of the piano. It is well-known that Elton John is a great piano player. Wanna watch the video?

Preparing for a journey by reading about a journey

This weekend was very good. I visited my grandparents and spent the evenings with my friends and sister. It is always good to go home and have some fun with the old friends. I like telling them about what it is like to live here in Pécs. So after this wonderful weekend I am having a rest and doing one of my homeworks.

We have to choose a book on Google and starting to read it. I and two of my friends are planning to travel to Paris in July for ten days to have a nice holiday. So I think of it a lot and I am getting interested in everything in connection with Paris or France. That’s why was the title ’France’. I have found a book called ’A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy’. I started to read and so far I like it.

I made some researches and found some critisisms and interpretations. One of them is by Sir Walter Scott, may you find it interesting:
"THE STYLE employed by Sterne is fancifully ornamented, but at the same time vigorous and masculine, and full of that animation and force which can only be derived by an intimate acquaintance with the early English prose writers. In the power of approaching and touching the finer feelings of the heart, he has never been excelled, if indeed, he has ever been equaled; and may be at once recorded as one of the most affected, and one of the most simple writers—as one of the greatest plagiarists, and of the most original geniuses whom England has produced.”

I hope I will have enough time to read it. Have a nice day!

A 'German week'

Hello! This is a beautiful day. After school I travel to Kaposvár because some relatives from Germany come to visit us after 6 years. I am very excited because they have changed a lot since the last time we were in Germany and we were missing them so much. They will spend only a week here because their parents are old and can’t be left alone for more than a week. They are the cousin of my father and his wife.

My father is German and we have plenty of relatives in Germany and here in Hungary as well. It is really good because I have been learning another foreign language since I was born. When the whole family gathers together we usually have to speak in German. Last summer one of my cousins got married and they celebrated it in Germany and in Hungary too. There was also a ceremony in the church which was a bit long because it was in Hungarian and after that in German. There are some cousins from the US too so our family is really multicultural.

I am happy about is because I can get to know other countries and places in the world. My favourite city is London but I also like Germany. I spent much time there during my summer holidays when I was younger. This weekend we plan to celebrate my father’s birthday. It will be delightful! Well, I must finish now because I don’t want to miss the bus.
Have a nice weekend!
